  • Short Term Work

Short term work opportunities, one to three month commitments for 2024 to start. Potential for employment in future.

Short term workers will be primarily focused on our timber frame/post and beam pavilion. This project utilizes all bulk material from the surrounding forest and milled on our horizontal bandsaw mill. There is no plywood or OSB in the building, rather we are making tongue and groove and shiplap sheathing boards. For a paid work opportunity you must be comfortable around power tools, but various levels of experience can be utilized, as we often work in pairs with a more senior person and a less experienced person.

The short term paid workers will be focused on the building project but occasionally may be asked to jump in on a bulk farming hit, if we are moving a bunch of compost or mulch or doing a large seeding or transplanting day.

No frills housing will be free for short term workers, such as tents or any available simple cabins, however we do have access to a communal on grid house within 2 miles of site in which there may be a room available to calculate as part of compensation. Bulk food, just like for WWOOFers, is included for those staying on site. Off-site is wonderful too for paid workers, and you will still get to enjoy lunch with the group every work day and may be asked to occasionally chef it up.

Short term workers are expected to work longer days, which will be dependent on weather and milestones for the week. We still will have our primary focus on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and prefer to work longer days on those days and keep Wednesday and weekends free barring anything out of the ordinary, but things like renting an earth moving machine or getting metal roofing on before a storm might warrant occasional work on Wednesday or Saturday. There is some flexibility, figure 30-40 hours.

  • Volunteer!

We are now accepting applications on a rolling basis for April, May, September, October & November of 2024.

Earthworks, water, and power systems provide infrastructure for an organic permaculture farm and market garden to flourish under challenging conditions (non-agricultural soils, heavy slopes, no grid for electricity, no consistent fossil fuel inputs, no tractors). This project is an example of commercial farming infrastructure as well as shelters that can be constructed with alternative building methods and maintained without fossil fuel inputs.

WWOOFers will participate in planting, maintaining and harvesting crops at the farm. There are building projects happening here including a timber frame/post and beam pavilion built from on-site trees (we have a sawmill) and WWOOFers will be able to participate and learn aspects of everything from basic carpentry to off grid systems to tree work and milling. This season we are focusing more on infrastructure and the gardens will be more simplified to food for our own meals and for retreats, as well as small batch products and selling some to a local indoor farmers market. Please let us know what you are interested in learning most so we can see if it will be a good fit during the time you want to come.

Decentralize NOW is an organization that creates decentralized systems prioritizing engaging human power, natural phenomenon, and low-tech local solutions integrating infrastructure, food, and proactive wellness. Our formal launch is in 2024. We are an assemblage of various members and entities who have worked in the fields of regenerative agriculture, radical alternative and sustainable construction practices, and holistic healthcare since 2011. Examples of projects range from rooftop farming in Queens, NY to constructing off-grid infrastructure in the remote upstate NY forest.

In 2024, Decentralize Now will continue two major pilot projects, the first is renovating an existing property with more than two centuries of history and the second is a new off-grid construction. Both projects intend to experiment with new techniques and prepare us for a future of energy descent, where we experience less readily available fossil fuels and materials from the global supply chain. Sharing this research via workshops and providing people the experience of off-grid and sustainable living through short and long-term rentals is how Decentralize Now sustains itself financially. We also invite people to immerse in the work via work-trade opportunities such as WWOOF in addition to more traditional employment.
